Tomi and Lili: The Shadow over the Lake

The rough boards of the dock glistened with dew, and the water lapped softly between the pilings. On a nearby post hung a sign: “Keep quiet— the lake is listening.” Across from it stood a bench, with a forgotten blanket folded on one end. The air smelled of wet bark and waterweed.

Tommy and Lily came running onto the dock. Waiting for them at the end was Tessa the beaver, the clever craftswoman. She wore a thick vest and a leather tool bag slung over her shoulder. Her whiskers quivered with worry.

“You’re just in time,” said Tessa. “Today someone stole the Heart of the Lake— the crystal that keeps the waters in balance. The dam is already groaning, the currents growl…”

From far away came a deep, trembling hum. In the twilight, a dark shadow swept across the reeds— broad wings, black as night.

“I saw a raven,” Tessa murmured. “Not an ordinary one, but a sly trickster. His name is Corvus. He loves anything that shines… and the power that shine can bring.”
